NHS braces
If your child is under the age of 18 and meets specific criteria, they may be eligible for NHS-funded orthodontic treatment. Our Specialist Orthodontists are trained to assess whether your child qualifies under NHS guidelines and if treatment is necessary for their oral health.

What are NHS braces?
NHS orthodontic treatment typically involves the use of metal fixed braces, which are effective at straightening teeth and correcting bite issues. While not as discreet as private options like ceramic braces or clear aligners, they remain a reliable and proven treatment method.

Eligibility requirements for NHS funded treatment
During your child’s initial consultation, we will assess their teeth using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). This scoring system assesses the severity of the orthodontic issue. Braces are available only for patients with a moderate to severe need for treatment.
These are types of dental problems that could qualify for NHS braces:
- Missing teeth
- Protrusion of the teeth over 6mm
- Moderate to severe crowding of the teeth
- Speech or chewing difficulties related to dental alignment
- Significant bit issues
What is the process for NHS brace treatment?
To begin the process for receiving NHS brace treatment, you must first see your dentist, who will refer you to an orthodontist if they believe treatment may be needed. During a free initial consultation, we will assess your child’s teeth to see if they qualify under the IOTN criteria.
Due to limited NHS funding each year, there is a waiting list for initial assessments, typically ranging from 12 to 30 months. However, urgent referrals for specific needs are usually seen within 6 months.
If your child is eligible for NHS-funded treatment, they’ll begin their journey with metal fixed braces. They’ll need to visit us regularly for adjustment appointments, and once treatment is complete, they’ll be given a retainer to help maintain their new smile.
What if my child isn't eligible?
If your child isn’t eligible for NHS braces, you may wish to consider private treatment at Colchester Orthodontic Centre. No dentist referral is needed to start private orthodontic care and we offer interest-free payment plans.
Private treatment offers several benefits, including flexible appointment times, immediate access (with no waiting lists!), and the option to choose from more discreet treatment options.
