Functional appliances: gentle support for growing smiles

Functional appliances are a type of orthodontic treatment used primarily in growing children and teens to help correct bite problems. These appliances work by guiding the growth of the jaw into a more balanced position, and can also help prepare the mouth for fixed brace treatment.

How do functional appliances work?

The most common functional appliance we use is the Twin Block brace. This appliance consists of upper and lower plates that cover the roof of the mouth and area under the tongue, and metal clasps that fit over your teeth. These parts work together to hold the jaw in the desired position.

This appliance simply clips over your teeth and is easily removable for eating, sport practise and teeth cleaning. Functional appliances are most effective when a patient is still growing, typically between the ages of 10 and 14.

Benefits of functional appliances

Functional appliances can be an excellent way to set growing smiles up for long-term success. They offer several key benefits, including:

Removability

The appliance can be taken out by the patient, making it easier to brush and maintain good oral hygiene.

Jaw guidance

Helps guide the natural growth of the jaw during key developmental years.

Efficient treatment

May reduce the time or complexity of future orthodontic treatment.

Lasting results

Supports improved bite function and long-term oral health.

What to expect during treatment

If you're a suitable candidate for removable braces, we'll begin by taking impressions and images of your teeth to create a custom treatment plan. Once your brace is ready, we'll fit it securely and show you how to remove and insert it properly.

You'll visit us every 4 to 5 weeks for adjustments, and when treatment is complete, we'll provide a retainer to help maintain your new smile. Treatment with a functional appliance is often followed up by fixed brace treatment.
