Metal fixed braces: tried and true
Metal fixed braces are a trusted classic for straightening teeth and can address a range of orthodontic issues. Metal fixed braces are the standard option available through the NHS for qualifying patients under 18.
Brace treatment is also a reliable and cost-effective solution for patients of any age undergoing private orthodontic treatment.

How do braces work?
Braces consist of small metal brackets that are fixed to each tooth and connected by a flexible metal wire called an archwire. The archwire is adjusted every few weeks, and the steady pressure gradually moves your teeth into their desired position.

Benefits of metal fixed braces
Braces are a trusted treatment option for orthodontists. Here are some of the reasons why:
Highly effective
Metal braces are one of the most reliable and efficient ways to correct a wide range of orthodontic issues, including overcrowding, gaps and bite problems.
Durable and strong
Made from high-grade stainless steel, these braces are built to last and can withstand the demands of daily wear.
Cost-effective
They are generally the most affordable orthodontic option and are available on the NHS for eligible patients under 18.
Customisable appearance
Our younger patients love that they can personalise their braces with different coloured elastics.
Ideal for children
Fixed braces are a great solution for younger patients who may not yet be ready to manage removable appliances consistently.
The brace treatment process
Discover what to expect during brace treatment at Colchester Orthodontic Centre:
- During your initial consultation with our Specialist Orthodontist, we will examine your teeth and take a 3D scan of your smile with our iTero scanner.
- Our Specialist Orthodontist will then create your custom treatment plan that will take you from start to finish with treatment.
- We will fit your teeth with the braces by securing the brackets to your teeth and attaching the archwire with small elastics.
- You will be instructed on how to care for your braces, and we will ask you to watch a short video on maintaining your braces.
- You will need to visit our practice for regular appointments so that we can adjust your braces as necessary and keep your progress on track.
- Once your braces are ready to come off, you will need to wear a retainer to keep your newly aligned teeth in place. We have removable and fixed retainer options.
