Looking after your fixed brace
It is important to look after your orthodontic appliance to ensure it works effectively and produces the desired results in the shortest possible time. With the right habits and a little extra care, you can avoid discomfort, protect your braces and keep your treatment on track.

Dealing with discomfort
It’s completely normal to experience a bit of discomfort when your fixed brace is first fitted, or when it’s adjusted. This is mostly due to the pressure that is being put on your teeth, and can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief.
In some cases, you could notice brackets coming loose, wires poking out or snapping. This could be a result of eating hard or sticky foods, chewing on pens or nails, nighttime teeth grinding or trauma. You’ll find tips below for how to deal with these types of issues.

Tips for common issues
If you’re experiencing discomfort due to your appliance, try these quick fixes at home:
Loose bracket
Cover with orthodontic relief wax to prevent irritation.
Long or poking wire
Cover with wax, or carefully trim it using clean nail clippers or small scissors if it’s safe to do so.
Snapped wire
If the wire is thin enough, gently remove both ends to avoid irritation.
Wire has slipped out
Try to gently guide it back into the bracket or cover with wax until your next appointment.
Repeated breakages or issues during treatment may delay your progress. If you are in significant discomfort and are unable to resolve the issue at home, please call us to book an appointment. Please note that there is a charge for out-of-hours breakage appointments.
Eating with fixed braces
It is important to avoid certain foods when wearing braces, as they could damage your brackets or wires. Here is a list of foods you should avoid eating during brace treatment:
Sticky foods
foods such as gum, caramel and licorice can get caught in your braces and pull out brackets and wires.
Hard foods
foods like raw carrots, popcorn and nuts can break brackets and bend wires. Be careful with chewing on large pieces of ice as well.
Foods that you bite into
certain foods such as corn on the cob, meat on the bone and whole apples require you to bite into them and this can loosen brackets or wires. We recommend cutting these into smaller pieces to enjoy.
It’s also wise to cut down on sugary foods and fizzy drinks. These can contribute to plaque build-up and increase your risk of tooth decay. If you do indulge occasionally, make sure to brush your teeth soon after.
