Brace After Care: Retainers
After orthodontic treatment, wearing a retainer is essential to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position. This is especially important during the first six months, when your teeth are still settling into their new alignment.
At Colchester Orthodontics Centre, we offer two types of retainers: removable and fixed. Our experts will help you determine which option is best for you.

Removable retainers
Removable retainers are clear, custom-made trays designed to hold your teeth in their new position after orthodontic treatment. They’re easy to remove and should be worn each night to prevent your teeth from moving.
To keep your retainer in top condition, rinse it with cool water after use, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush (no toothpaste) and store it safely in its case when not in use. With consistent wear, your removable retainer will help maintain your beautiful new smile for years to come.

Fixed retainers
Fixed retainers are thin metal wires that are discreetly bonded to the back of your upper and/or lower front teeth. They provide continuous support, making them a reliable and unobtrusive solution to maintaining your straight smile.
It is important to brush carefully around the retainer and use floss threaders or interdental brushes to keep the area clean and free from plaque. Fixed retainers are a reliable option for patients who want lasting results without having to remember to put in a removable appliance.
