Why have we postponed your appointment for removal of your brace?25th March 2020
We’re very sorry that we may have been forced to postpone the date for removal of your brace. We completely understand that you will have been looking forward to this and it comes as a great disappointment. Our reasons for doing so are based simply on the current COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic and are as follows:
- Removal of your brace is quite easy but does require the use of a polishing handpiece (dental drill). These cause a mist or aerosol to form which is essentially a mixture of dust, saliva and water.
- If you are a carrier of the COVID-19 virus an aerosol is a highly effective way of spreading the disease to the surrounding environment and attending staff. This results in cross infection and a worsening of the virus epidemic.
- Once your brace is fully removed a scan or impression of your teeth is taken and sent to laboratories across the country where your retainers are made. Retainers are essential to hold your teeth straight and in position and need to be fitted within 3-7 days of brace removal. However, laboratories cannot now guarantee that they can manufacture retainers in the above time frame due to staff illness and some are closing completely.
- Finally, we should all be staying at home as much as possible.
We strongly advise that you keep your braces on until it is safe to remove them and that we can be assured of getting retainers to you quickly.
Stay safe and well. We look forward to removing your braces and seeing your great smiles once the epidemic has passed.
